Dear Kake Families,
Can you feel it? Those precious extra minutes of daylight are sneaking back into our days! It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Kake Day Celebration - what an amazing gathering! I spent quite a bit of time taking in all the historical photos and listening to stories around the room. Speaking of our rich history, as a reminder OVK provides funds to support the development of a Kake History Curriculum. Jori Grant is doing incredible work on this project, and we can't wait to see it come to life in our classrooms.
As we kick off 2025, our halls are buzzing with energy (and yes, maybe a few germs too). Between Coast Guard demonstrations and basketball games, January is already shaping up to be an exciting month!
Coffee Chats with Dr. Anji Let's talk! I'd love to hear your thoughts over a cup of coffee. I'm available Wednesday mornings from 8:00 - 9:00 and after school from 3:00 - 4:00. No agenda needed - just drop by to share your ideas, concerns, or simply chat about how we can make our school even better. Your insights matter, and sometimes the best conversations happen over coffee!
Health Corner Well, we're certainly keeping the clinic busy! Between norovirus, RSV, and pink eye making the rounds, we're going through hand sanitizer like it's going out of style. While our students are showing amazing resilience, please keep your kiddos home if they're showing any symptoms. We want everyone healthy and ready to learn!
Coast Guard Visit This week, our K-7th graders got a special treat with the Coast Guard's "Kids Don't Float" presentation. Who knew water safety could be so entertaining? Watching our littlest ones try on adult-sized life jackets was definitely a highlight! Big thanks to Shane and Rudy for helping make this important safety lesson such a success.
Sitka Fine Arts Camp - Application Time! Exciting opportunity alert! Sitka Fine Arts Camp applications are now open, and we want to make sure our students don't miss out. Scholarship applications are due January 15th (coming up fast!). Our team is ready to help students with their applications, and we encourage parents to review all the program details at https://www.fineartscamp.org/. This camp is an amazing chance for our students to explore their creativity and connect with other young artists from across Alaska!
Coming Soon: "Stories of Kake" Mark your calendars! Sarah Campen and Ryan Connaro will be joining us next week for an amazing artist residency program. Thanks to KTC's generosity in providing housing at the Kake Tribal House, we'll be capturing and preserving our community's rich stories through art. Don't miss our Family Night on January 20th from 4:30 - 6:30pm - it's going to be special!
Thunderbird Basketball We're hosting Hydaburg this weekend for basketball (I can hear their plan landing as I write this) You can find game schedules on our website under "School Sports." Look for me and James at the entrance at the Community Center.
