Dear Kake Families and Community Members,
What an amazing week in our Kake schools! Our visiting artists Sarah and Ryan have filled our hallways with creative energy as they've worked with students on storytelling and oral histories.
Our community gym has been buzzing too! James and I have had the best spot at the "gate", greeting everyone who comes to cheer on our basketball teams. There's something special about these winter games that brings our whole community together 😊. I've been particularly proud of how our fans and students show such great sportsmanship - cheering FOR our teams rather than against our opponents, showing respect to officials, and creating an atmosphere that makes visiting teams feel welcome. That's the Kake way!
There's an energy in our buildings that makes these cold January days feel a lot warmer.
Here's what's been happening this week and what's coming up...
Stories of Kake - This Monday Evening!
Please join us this Monday, January 20th, from 4:30-6:30 PM for a very special community gathering! Our students have been working with visiting artists Sarah and Ryan this past week, preparing to collect and share stories from our community. They'll be joined by distinguished guest X'unei Lance Twitchell, an associate professor of Alaska Native Languages at UAS and writer for the PBS show "Molly of Denali."
We'll have food, storytelling, and a chance to connect with neighbors and friends. Your stories will become part of "A Piece of Kake" podcast, created by Sarah and Mona Evan. Can't make it Monday? No problem! A Story Booth will be available at the school from January 21-23 for additional story sharing.
Winter Weather Reminder
With all this snow and ice, please remember to send your children to school with full winter gear (warm coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves). This helps keep them safe and warm during outdoor activities and travel to and from school.
Sports Corner
Basketball season is in full swing! Here is the link to our "School Sports" page. You'll find the upcoming game schedules. Remember, positive cheering makes the games more fun for everyone!
Keep an eye out for information about an upcoming middle school wrestling fundraiser raffle - details coming soon!
Proud Moment
We're thrilled to announce that three of our high school students will be representing Kake at the Youth Advocacy Institute in Juneau this February! They'll be meeting with legislators and sharing their perspectives on education in Alaska.
