Update

Happy February!

We have some exciting updates and celebrations to share with you as we kick off this cold and windy month.

Welcome Back, T-Birds!

After a long and exhausting trip, our Thunderbirds are home safe! 🏀👏 We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported these student-athletes on their journey. Special appreciation goes out to:

  • Coach Anthony Ross for his leadership and dedication.

  • Robin Ross for her expert travel coordination and weather-watching skills.

  • Virlinda Wilson, who went above and beyond as their chaperone extraordinaire.

A big thank you to Kake Tribal and the entire community for rallying behind these kids and ensuring they had the resources they needed. We are incredibly proud of this team!

Stories of Kake Website is Live!

If you haven’t seen it yet, the Stories of Kake website is now up and running! This platform highlights the rich history, culture, and experiences of our community. We will be sharing it on Facebook, and we encourage you to check it out and share it with others!

Also, how exciting is it that X'uneal Lance Twitchell was recently nominated for an Emmy? His incredible work on Molly of Denali is being recognized on a national level, and we are honored to have had the chance to collaborate with him here in Kake.

Support the Middle School Wrestling Team – $3,000 Raised!

A huge shoutout to Chelsea Lewis and the Middle School wrestling team for their incredible effort in fundraising for their trip to regionals! Thanks to the hard work of these students and the generosity of our community, they have already raised $3,000! 🎉

The team is still selling raffle tickets, and the drawing will be held on 2/10/25. If you haven’t had a chance to purchase tickets yet, there’s still time to support these hardworking students.

For more information or to get your tickets, please contact Chelsea Lewis. Great job, wrestlers, and thank you to everyone who has supported them so far! 💪🏽🏆

Congratulations to Our Sitka Fine Arts Camp Scholarship Recipients!

We are thrilled to celebrate our students who have received scholarships for the Sitka Fine Arts Camp! 🎉 Adrien Skeek and Emma Cook have been awarded scholarships, and we are so excited for them to take part in this incredible opportunity. Here is more information about Sitka Fine Arts Camp: https://www.fineartscamp.org/

If there are any other scholarship recipients we missed, please let us know so we can recognize them as well!

Reviewing Our Attendance Policy – Your Input Needed!

We are currently reviewing our Attendance Policy and want to ensure that we communicate the right message:

✅ We want our healthy students at school every day.
🚫 But if they are sick, they should stay home.

We appreciate your feedback to make sure our policy reflects this balance. Feel free to share your thoughts with your child's teacher, or me. We are happy to take your thoughts into consideration.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 3 U.S. teens experience some form of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in a relationship before adulthood? This is why Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM) exists—to help young people recognize unhealthy behaviors and build healthy relationships.

This year’s theme, “Respect That”, reminds us that respect is more than a word—it’s an action. It means:

  • Listening to each other’s viewpoints

  • Setting and respecting boundaries

  • Treating partners with dignity

We encourage families to talk with their teens about what healthy relationships look like. For more resources, visit:

Our New Playground is Open! 🎉

Exciting news—our new playground is officially up and running! We had hoped to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony, but the cold weather arrived so quickly that we had to adjust our plans. Instead, our Head Start and District Preschoolers celebrated with ice cream 🍦, and it has been such a joy to see them enjoying the new space.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, come take a look—it’s a fantastic addition to our school!

It’s inspiring to see the dedication, hard work, and generosity that make Kake such a special place. Let’s keep lifting each other up and celebrating our students’ successes together. Wishing you all a fantastic week ahead!
