Superintendent Update

Dear KCSD Families,

I want to start by saying how incredibly proud I am of our Thunderbirds! Not only did our students bring home the Region V 1A Championship, but they also won the Sportsmanship Award. This is a true testament to the dedication and character of our team and community. Watching our students compete with skill and heart—and represent KCSD with such respect—has been an absolute honor. Way to go, Thunderbirds!

Lately, I’ve also been soaking in the beautiful weather we’ve been having here in Kake. It’s one of those times that makes me pause and appreciate just how special this place is.

Thunderbirds Headed to State!

Our Thunderbirds will be heading to the State Tournament from March 12-15! The schedule for the tournament will be announced on March 9th. If your student (other than our boys' basketball players) will be out of school during this time, please let Robin Ross know in advance.

Summer School Update

Unfortunately, I have some disappointing news to share. Due to ongoing budget concerns and uncertainty in our funding, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2025 summer school program. We know this will be disappointing for families and students, and we truly wish we could move forward as planned. However, with our current budget uncertainties, we must proceed with caution. Our hope is that we will be able to restore summer school in the future. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate these challenges.

Parent-Teacher Conferences (March 5-7)

Parent-teacher conferences are happening this Wednesday through Friday (March 5-7), and we encourage all families to sign up! Conferences are a great opportunity to connect with teachers, discuss your child’s progress, and set goals for the remainder of the year. We look forward to seeing you! Reminder- students will be released at 2:00 pm

During conferences, we are also asking eligible families to complete Form 506 for Indian Education funding. These forms are critical to ensuring our district continues to receive grant funding for Indian Education programs. Staff will be available to assist with the form during conferences, and we will also be handing them out at student pick-up and drop-off. You can fill it out on-site or return completed forms to Robin Ross or Lorenda Johnson. Thank you for your help in keeping these important funds available for our students!

Upcoming School Board Meetings (March 10 & 12)

Our next School Board meetings will be held on March 10th and 12th. A few important topics will be covered, including:

  • Activity Budget Requests – The board will review requests and hear public input on school activities.

  • Attendance Policy Changes – We’ve listened to your feedback and will be making changes to the attendance policy. These updates are aimed at better supporting students and families while maintaining high expectations for attendance.

As always, community members are welcome to attend and provide feedback. Your input is valued, and we appreciate your engagement in these discussions. If you'd like the agenda or minutes from previous meetings you can use this link: https://www.kakeschools.com/page/school-board-meeting-minutes
