Superintendent Update

Dear Families,

Welcome back from spring break! It (finally?) feels like spring in Kake, and what a break it was—amazing weather and good vibes all around. I spent the week in Juneau and got to see a bunch of you at Gold Medal. It was fun to catch some games and hang out with students and families on the ferry ride home. I heard the weather in Kake was just as awesome—so glad everyone got a chance to recharge before we head into the final stretch of the school year.

👏 Paraprofessional Appreciation Day – April 2nd
Tomorrow is Paraprofessional Day, and we want to give a BIG thank you to our incredible team of paraprofessionals. These dedicated folks work side-by-side with students who benefit from additional support, and they are essential to everything we do here at KCSD. If you see Sylvia, Angela, Corie, Destinni, or Nikki, please take a moment to share your appreciation. A kind word or note can go a long way. You can read more about the role of paraprofessionals here.

📝 AKStar Testing Window – April 7 to April 18
State testing season is here! Between April 7 and April 18, students in grades 3-9 will take part in AKStar assessments. Don’t worry—they won’t be testing every single day. This window just gives us time to schedule and complete the testing sessions. These assessments help us understand how well our curriculum is working and where your child may need additional support. One of the best ways to help? Make sure they get good sleep and arrive on time with a solid breakfast and a calm start to the day.

🗓️ Upcoming School Board Meetings

  • Work Session – April 14, 2025

  • Regular Board Meeting – April 16, 2025
You can find the meeting agendas and documents on our website. Board meetings are open to the public—we’d love to see you there.

🧪 Welcome (Pending Board Approval) – Eric Hadley, High School Science
We’re excited to announce that (pending board approval), Eric Hadley will be joining us as our new high school science teacher! Eric visited Kake just before spring break and brings over 30 years of experience in science education. He’s led curriculum development, mentored teachers across the country, directed a nature center, and contributed to both state and national science education initiatives. We’re thrilled to welcome him to our community.

🎒 “Cruising into Kindergarten” – May 2, 2025
Families of incoming kindergarteners—mark your calendars! Ms. Tauni, Ms. Rhonda, and our team will be hosting a “Cruising into Kindergarten” afternoon on Friday, May 2nd. New students will get to visit the classroom, meet their teacher, and even pick out a fun new backpack for the fall. More info will be coming soon!

📅 Looking Ahead to May
May is packed with activities—from field trips to concerts to graduations. Make sure to keep an eye on our website or our KCSD Facebook page so you don’t miss any of the action. There’s a lot to celebrate as we head into the final stretch of the year!

Let us know if you have any questions, and as always—thank you for being such an engaged and supportive part of our school community.
